Cynthia has been associated with the festival for many years. She has been a storyteller at our “mini” events such as Halloween, Christmas and the Comedy Festival, as well as telling to the children in those years when we had a children’s festival. She is from Dorchester, England where she studied nursing. She has been in the Kootenays for 17 years and in Procter since 1999. She is the mother of two and grandmother of four and is a stalwart volunteer in all things community.
The Post Office in Harrop was incorporated in 1907, the Post Office in Procter in 1906. This dual Centennial has given rise to a series of special events and celebrations this year. The Kootenay Storytelling Festival is participating by offering two stories of local family history. Cynthia will tell of the Quin family of Harrop who have lived here since 1906, having moved here from Winnipeg. The Quins were the neighbours of the Harrop family, after whom the community is named. Like many the lure of the land for farming was great. Along with farming they have been involved in a wide variety of endeavours, even a few years of blue fox farming in the 1920’s. The Quins and their extended families have been involved in community events since the beginning. There’s even a descendant of the original Quins on the storytelling festival’s organizing committee. And no, it’s not our storyteller Cynthia Quinn-Young, with two n’s.
