Simon Goulet

The Kootenay Storytelling festival has forged a partnership with the West Kootenay Francophone Association and for the first time will be presenting a story in French. Simon Goulet will be our first Francophone storyteller. Simon lived in Montreal where he was involved in theatre and the performing arts. His work with the local Francophone association has allowed him to bring in movies to the hundreds of Francophones and Francophiles who live in the Kootenays. He now lives in Argenta where he is working the land.

Simon a vécu à Montréal où il a pratiqué le théâtre et diverses formes de performances. Puis il a déménagé à Nelson et a travaillé pour l’Association des francophones des Kootenays ouest, où il a eu la chance de présenter des films en français et de partager avec la communauté francophone. Il habite maintenant Argenta pour y travailler la terre. L’histoire est une réflexion sur sa propre expérience et aspirations spirituels. Voici une belle opportunité pour partager une fois de plus dans la langue de Molière. 

Levasseur and Machabee

Here we are, two men feeling out of place. It’s at the contact of this empty social scene that we decided to cross beyond Upper Canada, on the outlook for meaning. It’s in 1800 that I, Jean Levasseur, and my friend Machabée, of Iroquoi blood, enrolled ourselves as rowers for the Hudson-Bay Company. One year it took us to travel from the Saint Lawrence valley to the Kootenay region, west of the continent. Our main objective being to transport European goods to a fur trading post. During the voyage, we started to realize the consequences of our contract, simply because it lacked in a spiritual base. What will happen when the last breath of a natural life style eclipses? 

Nous voici, deux hommes qui se sentent déplacés. Au contact du vide social qui nous entours, nous décidions de traverser le Haut-Canada, à la recherche d’un jour meilleur. C’est en 1800 que moi même, Jean Levasseur, et mon ami Machabée, d’origine Iroquoise, s’engagent comme pagayeurs pour la compagnie de la Baie-d’Hudson. Un an, qu’il nous faudra pour passer de la vallée du Saint Laurent à la région des Kootenays, à l’ouest du continent. Le tout, dans le but de fournir des objets européens pour le commerce des fourrures. Mais quelles sont les conséquences d’une relation d’affaire en manque d’une base spirituel. Qu’arrivera t’il quand le dernier souffle du mode de vie naturel sera éteint ?
